Americans have their favorites: favorite crust, favorite sauce, favorite go-to pizzeria, favorite cheese, favorite style. But, pizza lovers are stretching their imaginations and taste buds in a larger direction — through toppings. Even though traditional ingredients like pepperoni, mozzarella and green peppers are here to stay, consumers are demanding unique, localized and seasonal additives to their pies.

Bloomberg reported at the beginning of 2021 that pizza would be the “dish of the year.” Why? It’s checking off almost all of the consumer trend boxes: It’s comforting, it’s the quintessential delivery food and it’s great eaten alone or shared with close friends or family who are quarantining. And, with popularity and a renewed demand comes a ripe opportunity for pizza makers to outbake the competition.

Localized Ingredients

There’s no doubt that small businesses have suffered during the pandemic. But, there’s hope in pizza. PMQ Pizza Magazine notes that independent restaurants will learn, and “new independents will arise out of the ashes.” Independent restaurants will “need to think locally” to thrive, and this includes catering to customers who live within driving, delivery and walking distance. But, it goes further than that. Consumers want ingredients that are localized and provide a comforting nod to their roots. Traveling Vineyard named its top three trending topping mashups, and our mouths are already watering.

  • Fried Chicken and Sweet BBQ Sauce. California’s chicken, Kansas City’s barbecue, no matter where you’re from, there is a unique ingredient that works when added to a traditional pizza base.
  • Spinach and Artichoke. Are you a local vegan or vegetarian restaurant? Chances are you have these on the pizza menu. Traveling Vineyard reminds us that spinach and artichoke dip is best served with crusty bread as a starter, so why not on pizza?
  • Taco Supreme. Americans love tacos. From ground beef to jalapenos to black olives, sour cream and avocado, tacos can easily be transformed to a flat surface. No matter where you’re located, we’re almost positive the taco pizza will be a hit.
